    Gebeliğin büyüklüğü, son adet kanamanızın başladığı günden itibaren hesaplanır. Ancak bu, döllenmenin adetten 14 gün sonra olduğu varsayımına dayanır. Döllenme tarihindeki farklılıklarda ultrason ölçümleri esas alınır. Ultrason ölçümlerinin belli bir yanılma payı vardır. Gebeliğin 8-12 haftası arasında bu yanılma payı en az olduğundan gebeliğin büyüklüğü bu haftalarda hesaplanan büyüklüğe göre ele alınmalıdır. Eğer bu dönemde son adete göre büyüklük arasında 1 haftadan daha fazla fark varsa ultrasonu temel kabul etmek doğru olur.
